Environment Policy

As Mackay Sugar is conscious of its responsibilities to improve its environmental performance through sustainable practices, the following environmental objectives have been established as the overall goals for environment performance identified in the environmental policy.

  • Minimise Adverse Impacts on the Environment (Air, Water and Land).
  • Minimise Adverse Impacts on Public Amenity, Health and Safety (Noise and Odour)
  • Conserve Resources and Minimise Wastes.
  • Promote Environmental Awareness among Employees and the Community.
  • Pragmatic Environmental Management

Mackay Sugar is subject to compliance with various State and Federal legislation primarily relating to emissions to air and discharges to water and land. In line with these, Mackay Sugar has made significant investments in recent years in terms of capital and effort, to either comply with or to work towards compliance with all government regulations. These investments have been targeted specifically at reducing air pollution, in wastewater treatment and in the management of waste products such as mill mud and boiler ash.

Mackay Sugar has an integrated environmental management system (IEMS) which demonstrates its commitment to environmental management, resource use and sustainable development. Implementation of the IEMS is by way of review of the following environmental plans so as to provide continual improvement in its environmental performance:

  • Air Quality Plan for particulate, fume, smoke and dust emissions
  • Water Quality Plan for receiving water, stormwater and groundwater.
  • Land Management Plan
  • Public Health and Safety Plan for noise reduction, odour management and airborne and waterborne health contaminants
  • Raw Water Management Plan
  • Energy Management Plan
  • Site Specific Plans such as
  • Flammable and Combustible Liquids Storage Action Plan
  • Waste Management Action Plan
  • Stormwater Management Action Plan
  • Site Audit Action Plan
  • Risk Aspects Action Plan
